Pilates: A Work Out For Mind and Body

Jul 25th, 2008 by Addy | 0

If you are a big fan of yoga, you may just as well be a big fan of pilates. Pilates is very similar to yoga, using graceful movements and poses to work core muscle groups in your body. I first heard of pilates when I was a freshman in college almost eight years ago when I was taking a public speaking class. The topic for one of our speech assignments was to give a speech in which we demonstrate how to do something. For this one girl’s speech, she brought in this pilates video, yoga mat and a medicine ball and demonstrated a few basic exercises to the class on how pilates was done. I remember thinking that it seemed so simplistic…that is, until I tried it and found out otherwise. Pilates is actually very challenging! It is challenging to remain totally focused and calm while your inflexible body (my body is extremely inflexible) tries to flex and hold these difficult poses. Pilates is beneficial for a number of reasons. It improves your posture, strengthens your spine and tones your abs by focusing on your core. What’s even better is that it doesn’t require any major equipment; all you need is a mat or fluffy towel and maybe a medicine ball (optional).

If You Are Not Drinking Cranberry Juice, Maybe You Should Be

Jul 25th, 2008 by Addy | 0

My favorite juice also happens to be one of the healthiest juices you can drink: cranberry juice. You may have heard wonderful things about cranberry juice. However, the truth of the matter is that cranberry juice is deliciously healthy for you. It is high in antioxidants, which are fabulous at fighting off infections. Therefore, the thinking behind that is that you, hopefully, shouldn’t be getting sick as often as other people who don’t really eat or drink healthy. Additionally, cranberry juice is a killer…of infections that is. Many people who are prone to getting (or who have been diagnosed with) urinary tract infections are often advised right off the bat to drink cranberry juice because in the past, cranberry juice has been shown to be extremely effective in combating infections. Cranberry juice is also high in vitamin C, which is one of the major reasons it is so good at fighting off infections. Some people don’t particularly care for the taste of cranberry juice, arguing that it is too tart. However, if you go to your local supermarket, you’ll find that there are a variety of cranberry juice blends. For example, there is cranberry apple juice, cranberry raspberry juice, cranberry grape juice and a host of other choices.

Prenatal Yoga

Jul 24th, 2008 by Addy | 0

What is ite As many may know by now, or not, the word ‘Yoga’ is derived from an ancient Indian word which translates into “union”. Yoga is a practice of poses and postures connected to the development of a person’s body strength and flexibility. Different poses or postures have, in themselves, different benefits.

Although it may look easy to a stranger’s eye, the alignment of postures are physically challenging for beginners, many of them may giggle at the awkwardness of their posture. I’ve personally thought and still think that yoga is a slow activity yet I find myself sweating profusely than any other sport that I’ve tried.

Sleeping Disorder

Jul 24th, 2008 by Addy | 0

Many people suffer from sleeping disorder or otherwise being deprived of sufficient sleep. This may be due to several reasons but mainly sacrificing the time for sleep in exchange for more time to do something else - work or play alike. People who realize that are deprived of sleep or have unhealthy sleeping habits may think that the consequences are not important - the ‘how bad can it bee’ attitude. Some may even think that as long as I sleep a cumulative of 7-8 hours, it will be sufficient. So what they do is they sleep an average of maybe four hours during the afternoons when they can no longer hold back or resist the fatigue, and sleep a short few more hours during midnight. Leaving the rest of the time doing things they feel are more important that sleep.

Tai Chi and Core Training (Bruce Lee)

Jul 24th, 2008 by Addy | 0

Many may ask, ‘How does Tai Chi relate to Bruce Leee’ At first glance, it does appear that Tai Chi - a practice of slow and smooth movements - does not run parallel to Bruce Lee’s lightning lethal moves of martial arts fighting. But after little research, I found that there are vast similarities as Bruce Lee’s emphasis on functional strength or core strength in his physiology of exercise studies in regards to Tai Chi’s teachings.
