Employment Success Starts at Home: Preparing Your College Student For a JOB

When we parent well, everyone will reap grand rewards. The fruits of parenting college students will be harvested in the seasons that follow the college years, when the formal education is complete. While there is an ease of parental controls with college students, there continues to be a need for guidance that is as meaningful and as valuable as it has ever been.

Parents can help make their maturing young adult children more employable by teaching them core values, such as responsibility, accountability, independence, and respect for others. These values will make them a more attractive hire for prospective employers in their future. Their parents are their role models and teachers.

Three Positve Keys to Parenting a College Student

Parenting a college student is an on-going process. To ease parental controls during these launching years does not mean that parenting a college student is any less significant than parenting a young child. Actually I think the stakes are higher. This is the final round.

Parents have to adjust to a new set of anxieties, power struggles, emotional volatility, and mental health issues that surface during the college years. Parents tend to worry about binge drinking, late night parties, and other unhealthy behaviors. These behaviors can be exacerbated if the parents’ relationships with their children are on rocky ground.

Top Ten Email Tips

Most of us weren’t born with a genetic predisposition for email, so it’s only natural to take a few missteps along the way. If you want to look like an email pro and avoid the most common errors, follow these ‘Netiquette’ tips:

1. Use the Subject Line - Always include a brief Subject line that provides some insight into the focus of your email. Given the volume of email that most people receive, the Subject line is becoming a “must-have” if you want your message to be read or noticed. Avoid generic “Hi” or non-specific Subject lines that tell the recipient nothing. Some spam filters will block messages without a Subject line, so for the scant few seconds it requires to enter a few words, it’s in your best interest to always include a Subject.
