Gardening Techniques - Mulching

Jul 12th, 2008 by Addy | 0

One of the gardening techniques that most confuses beginners, and more experienced gardeners, is Mulching. There is much discussion, muttering and head shaking over this process which has it’s origins lost in the mists of time. So what is ite In a nutshell, mulching is putting a thick layer of material over the soil around your plants. That is simple enough, the debate comes when discussing the best materials, and that has to be a matter of personal choice. Organic matter blended into heavy or clay soil will break it up and improve drainage and fertility. The same organic material mixed into light, sandy soils will help it hold water and improve fertility. Inorganic mulches such as plastic shreddings, and stones or chippings will do little for the fertility of the soil but will help conserve water. One of the main reasons for using mulches as an important gardening technique is that it does preserve moisture in your garden, as water becomes a more expensive and scarce resource we need to make the most of it. The natural increase in fertility of a well mulched soil also saves on buying expensive fertilizers and the added benefit of weed reduction saves not only time and money but also an aching back!

Training Your Dog to \”Stand\”

Jul 12th, 2008 by Addy | 0

When you give a dog any command, you have routinely assumed a domineering role and put the dog into a submissive one. Standing is a somewhat dominant canine posture, whereas the Sit and the Down are submissive dog positions, so it is sometimes difficult to teach a naturally obedient dog to “Stand” when told. When a dog is given the command “Stand,” many will comply, but lower their tails quickly, ears and head - all obedient body language. Be calm and patient. The preferred dog Stand has four feet on the floor but it’s also nice to see his head up and the tail wagging. Don’t be too concerned if at first your dog would rather be a jokester than stand still. He will mature one day.

Jul 12th, 2008 by Addy | 0

A flowering tree is best planted for spring blooming in the fall when dormant, however, container flowering trees can be planted any season, but preferably fall and winter is best. Gardeners can buy many colors of flowering trees: red, white, yellow, peach, pink, plum, lavender, blue, and apricot. You can buy a flowering tree that can bloom during any season: fall flowering, winter flowering, and spring flowering when most trees bloom, and then, summer flowering. The weather is a determining factor in tree flowering; some trees require chilling, yet other flowering trees require hot, humid temperatures. The flowering dogwood tree, Cornus florida, blooms in Florida in March, but it can flower in Tennessee in April, largely because of the temperature differences. A flowering apricot tree, Prunus mume, can bloom in Georgia in January, but in Illinois, the flowering is delayed until April or May, depending on the large temperature difference. Flowering cherry trees bloom in red, pink, and white colors, and some varieties bloom over a period of one to two months.
